3 light and simple Tuscan recipes for summer

When summer arrives it can be a chore spending too much time in the kitchen when you want to be outside making the most of the sunshine. These Italian dishes are quick, easy, tasty....and healthy too!

Caprese Salad

The classic Caprese, this delicious salad always looks stylish on a lunch table

3 vine-ripe tomatoes,1/4-inch thick slices

1 pound fresh mozzarella, 1/4-inch thick slices

Extra-virgin olive oil and Balsamic vinegar for drizzling

Layer alternating slices of tomatoes and mozzarella, adding a basil leaf between each, on a large, shallow platter. Drizzle the salad with extra-virgin olive oil and season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Grilled Zucchini & Summer Squash

(By Stefano Coppola)

A simple enough recipe, this grilled zucchini is positively bursting with flavour from the marinade and a quick char from the grill. This makes a fabulous side dish, hot, at room temperature, or the following day cold. You´ll have leftover marinade too which you can re-use to grill more vegetables or drizzle over salad.

2 zucchini, cut into 1 inch cubes

3 summer squash, cut into 1 inch cubes

White Bean Dip

Dips always go down well with adults and children alike and this one is tasty and healthy, especially if you serve it with crudités.

1 can 450 g Cannellini beans, rinsed and drained (or other white beans, but cannellini are traditionally used)

2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar

2 tsp olive oil

2 Tbsp basil, fresh, thinly sliced

1/2 tsp rosemary or sage, fresh, chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Good pinch of salt

Ground black pepper

In a large bowl, mash the beans with the back of a fork or a hand-held potato masher. Stir in the vinegar, olive oil, chopped herbs, garlic, and pepper flakes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve immediately with ciabatta or focaccia bread and crudités.

Hope you enjoy these summer recipes wherever you are in the world. Don´t forget to leave a comment if you try any of them.

What to do in Tuscany: Events in July-August 2011

Dear Friends,
Today I want to highlight some interesting shows and events taking place this summer in Tuscany, geared to both adults and children, especially for those who are just about to set off on their holidays in the coming weeks.

- The first event I´d like to mention is the classical music concerts taking place in Siena in the beautiful Accademia Chigiana in one of the most beautiful theatres of the Italian Renaissance. For the concert program see the following link: http://www.chigiana.it/

- Another popular event in Tuscany is the prestigious Festival de la Música de Radicondoli which begins on the 29th of July and continues until the 7th August. Here you will be able to enjoy pleasant evenings with music. Please visit the following site for more information: http://www.radicondoliarte.org/

- Another interesting festival is the Teatro Povero di Montichiello, where actors and musicians improvise to create a typically Tuscan scene. See the official website: http://www.teatropovero.it/

- I´d also like to recommend another interesting music festival, at San Galgano (see the above photo), an impressive roofless church situated in a spectacular enclave in Tuscany. Over the next weeks in this unique place various musical performances and operas will take place. A couple which particularly stand out are Carmina Burana and Swan Lake. For more information you can see the following webpage: http://www.festivalopera.it

- For something a bit different, from the 24th of July up until the 7th of August, in Siena, the jazz concerts are taking place. The Jazz school of Siena is one of the most important in the whole of Italy. For more information and the concert program visit the official website: http://www.sienajazz.it/

- Other notable musical events include: the Music festival of the Valdorcia (1st-16th August), the festival of the Crete Senesi from the 14th to the 22nd August and the Sarteano Jazz Festival from the 24th to the 26th August.

There are also events not exclusively devoted to music and particularly appropriate for children as well as adults.

- The Pontassieve: Summer in the Park festival overflowing with concerts, cinema, musical theatre, children’s events and dance takes place from 26th July until 13th September (Florence Province). See the following link: http://www.estatealparco.it/default.asp

- Finally, a 10 day festival of music, food, dance, markets, entertainment and shows to celebrate the Patron Saint of Borgo, San Lorenzo, will take place in the Borgo itself (Florence Province) from the 7th to the 15th August. Tel: 055 845 6230 / 84966229.

As always, I hope that this information is useful to those planning their upcoming holidays and that you enjoy any of the events you go to.

Emma.

Off-the-beaten spots of Siena

Dear friends,
Today I would like to talk about some spot which, from my point of view, have special magic and which should never be missed in a trip to Siena if it is longer than a day. In a previous post I have talked about the main places in town and what should be seen in a visit to Siena in a day. But today I would like to complete the information with the most beautiful spots which are missed in a brief visit.

The first magical spot is the view of the town from Piazza San Domenico.
Depending on the point of access to town which you choose you may miss one of the most picture postcard sights. In fact, from the square, it is possible to enjoy a unique panorama taking in the cathedral of Siena which is, no doubt, one of the most impressive works in town and one of the artistic and architectural world heritage samples.
The second magical spot of town is Porta Romana.
This city gate is probably the prettiest and best preserved. It is located to the south, therefore it was named after its direction, the capital of the Roman Empire (Rome).
This gate is really interesting to visit because it keeps the two gates that people had to go through to get to town. In the Middle Ages, for the sake of security, the town was protected by a main gate which opened towards a courtyard where visitors could be seen from closer and a second gate to enter town.
Next to this gate is a very pretty building which once was a mental hospital, and is nowadays part of the University of Siena.
The way to get from the center of town to the gate will take you along very pretty off-the- beaten lanes.
The third magical spot in Siena is the Basilica dell Osservanza.
To get to the Basílica it is necessary to go by car or bus. The Basílica lies in the outskirts of town and is an ancient Franciscan convent. The church itself has nothing special to view but if the cloister is open you should explore this spot giving lovely peace and quiet. This cloister is particularly pretty because of the environs in which it is in and the fantastic views of Siena.
As I always have, I hope this information is useful.
Best regards,

G.

Airports of Tuscany

Dear friends,

Today lets talk about the three most suitable airports for those travelling to Tuscany:

Airport of Pisa

It is the main airport in Tuscany. Most airlines travel from Pisa but most importantly it is where Ryan Air lands with its Low Cost flights connecting Tuscany with most European main town.

This airport only operates mainland European towns and many destinations from UK and Ireland.

The airport of Pisa is recommendable for those travelling to the north and coastal Tuscany and, in particular, the provinces of Pisa, Florence, Lucca, Prato and Massa Carrara.

There are excellent connections from this airport by bus to Siena and by train and bus to Florence. Another advantage of Pisa’s airport is its railway station inside the airport.

Airport of Florence

Florence only operates from Europe.

The airport of the capital of Tuscany is an authentic example of how a bad policy and Meridiana (that is, Alitalia) have negatively interfered in Italian business so much. Consequently, the third most visited town of Italy and one of the most beautiful and famed towns worldwide has a low level airport.

This airport monopolized by Meridiana offers expensive flights by the old Meridiana’s planes that tend to be delayed. Besides, as always the town of Florencia has never had the ambition to improve or change the runway there are just some kinds of planes that manage to land in this very short runway located between the A1 and the mountains.

For those reasons I do not recommend this airport.

Airport of Siena

It operates mainland towns as well as London.
The airport of Siena is ideal for those who afford their own light aircraft, as there are no regular flights to this airport.

Alternative airports: Bologna, Perugia and Rome

Airport of Bologna

This is the chance for travellers from New Yorkers as this airport operates New York. The airport of Bologna can be an alternative to the airport of Pisa for those travelling to Florence and not finding flights available to get to the capital or simply prefer this option. The airport of Bologna is a moderately large airport having several flights from different points of the European mainland town and London..

Airport of Perugia

The airport of Perugia which is in currently and steadily growing offers flights from European mainland towns and London for the time being. From Spain travellers can fly from Girona (Barcelona) three times a week, only from March to October. The airport of Perugia is ideal for those who wish to know the region of Umbria (also very pretty) and for the travellers who journey to the south of Tuscany in particular those who have planned to travel to the provinces of Siena y Arezzo.

Airport of Rome

This is the only airport operating intercontinental flights. Therefore for those who come from America, Australia, Africa or Asia it is the only chance with Milan Airport to get to Italy and from there journey to Tuscany.

This airport has to be taken in as an alternative to Pisa for those who travel to the south of Tuscany, in particular to the provinces of Siena, Arezzo and Grosseto and travel from Europe.

Depending on the provinces to which you are travelling the airport of Rome can be equidistant for those travelling to the airport of Pisa, although it is in the region of Lazio.

RyanAir flies from Roma Ciampino and many others companies fly from Fiumicino. Both airports are very well communicated with the center of Rome and its railway station.

As I always have, I hope this information is useful in preparing your trip around Tuscany,

Best regards

How to travel around Tuscany

Dear Friends,

We receive many mails from the blog’s following asking what the best way to know Tuscany is and mainly whether it is necessary to go around by car. That is why here I will give you the following information:

1- If your trip is only devoted to Florence and a day dedicated to Siena and San Gimignano you should avoid hiring a car. Florence is a relatively small town which must be known on foot. Besides, the access to cars in the historic heart is not permitted, therefore hiring a car to know Florence is unnecessary expense. Besides parking is another problem. As it is a town dating back to the 16th century, it is not logistically prepared with car parks and they are not enough. The rail and road communications to Siena and San Gimignano are excellent and buses leave hourly.

2- If you want to know the real Tuscany, its little villages and its ravishing countryside, it is essential to travel by car as it is the only way to reach the most enchanting off the beaten places where no public transport can take you.

As I always have, I hope this information is useful to prepare your trip.

Best wishes,

Giovanni

How to save in a trip to Tuscany

How to save in a trip to Tuscany

Tuscany is an area of Italy visited by high standing tourism. However, it is also possible to visit this splendid region on low budget following the recommendations below:

1- Accommodation
All those who do not want to spend a fortune in a trip around the region should hire an apartment with kitchen in a rural house in Tuscany. Having a kitchen will help them avoid having breakfast and dinner out and save.
Tuscany offers many accommodations of this kind but beware of high season as they only rent from Saturday to Saturday.

2- Shopping
If you are in a little touristic village, avoid shopping in the village stores. It can be too expensive, therefore always ask where the nearest COOP to your apartment is. COOP is one of the best inventions of our period of “socialism”: it is a producers’ cooperative where you will be able to buy excellent food products at very low prices.

3- Transport
Avoid public transport as it is expensive and does not go to the most enchanting off the beaten places to visit in Tuscany.
Hire a car, a diesel or a CNG one if possible. Fuel in Italy is very expensive, much more than in US.

4- Eating out
If you need to stick to a lower budget, do not despair as in Tuscany it is possible to eat at very fair prices for there are many "Pizza al Taglio", shops where for a few Euros you will be able to eat excellent pizza with fresh beer.

Another option is visiting some Alimentari which can be located at villages or in bigger towns, such as COOP or a Consorzio Agrario. Go to the section of sausages, then choose the bread you like most (in Tuscany we have excellent bread) and prepare it with the most delicious cheese or sausages that our region offers.

And if, when you go out at night, you want to spend little, do not despair as it is also possible. In the summer Tuscany offers many Feste Unitá or Sagre in which it is possible to eat at prices more than appropriate: (10-15 Euros).

Well Friends,

enjoy Tuscany!

How much does travelling to Tuscany cost?

Hello friends,

Today I have prepared an article to help you work out the cost of a trip to Tuscany.

Currency and Exchange rate
All those readers of this weblog who are not Europeans have to know that in Tuscany the currency is the Euro, whose present exchange rate for USD is not favourable as it is 1 Euro = 1,50 USD. Anyway as exchange rates are variable I recommend that you visit this page in Yahoo to know the exact rate of exchange.

Restaurants
Dining in a restaurant is about €25-30, although prices can lower substantially depending on whether you drink wine or not. Eating at a pizzeria can turn out somewhat cheaper as cost ranges from €20-25.

Bars
A coffee is about €1 and full breakfast is about €5. Bars and pizzerias are the places where it is possible to have lunch for about less than €6.

Public means of transport
A bus ticket tends to cost about €1 and a train ticket Rome-Florence (3 hours of train journey) tends to cost €30 depending on the type of train. Important: tickets cannot be purchased on buses or trains but in the tobacconist’s or in some specific places devoted to selling them and then have to be validated on the bus or, in the case of the train, in the yellow machines that there are on the platforms.

Getting on a train without a ticket may cost dearly¡ therefore, watch out¡

Lastly, taxis are generally extremely expensive. There are a few and they have to be phoned, therefore you should avoid them as a journey of about 10 minutes can cost you about €20.

Sleeping- Hotels
The offer of Hotels in Italy in general is quite old and hotels tend to be of low quality, mainly, in cities where the strong measures to keep the artistic heritage prevent important restructuring.
A 3-star hotel in low season in the centre of Florence can easily cost about €120 per double room/night. If you can enjoy a trip of several days or have a car, I recommend that you stay at a country hotel in the surroundings of cities where it is possible to find accommodation of excellent quality at lower prices.

Parking
All towns are very ancient are were founded when there were no cars, therefore they are not equipped with parking area and more often than not it is hard to find it.
Street parking, in the Blue Area, tend to cost around €1.50 an hour (depending on the town you are staying), while private parking generally costs about €2 an hour.

Certainly, I hope you might find this information useful in preparing your trip,

Best regards,

Giovanni

Tuscany in November

November in Tuscany

November is a strange month, in which the olive harvest time ends the season of fields bedecked with flowers and the calendar gives way to the cold winter months when the land is bathed in those shades of black and dark brown blending with green country landscapes and leafless trees.

The scenery of Tuscany in November turns in what the English call “Dramatic Beauty” but without losing its magic and singular beauty. In a trip in November there are many things to relish such as the scenery shrouded in stunning morning mist and dinner based on white truffle, cep mushrooms and “novella” wine in restaurants.

November is also a month to taste the world renowned Tuscan oil which can also be relished in this season in all its splendour. In this season most regarded restaurants prepare the bruschetta (toasted handmade bread) with oil and garlic. The recently produced oil has a bright green colour and an intense almost sharp flavour that dilute immediately, reason why it has to be savoured “in situ”.

A visit to Florence and the main art towns is also a “gift from gods” as in this time of year there are fewer tourists visiting our pretty land and the flights tend to be cheaper. For example Ryan Air offers flights to Pisa at really low prices.

Take your time to indulge in this photograph set of Tuscany in November.

A hug for all of you,

Giovanni

Tuscany with Children

Hi, Everyone!

Today I want to discuss a Topic which many people have been writing to me about. Families are interested in traveling to Tuscany with their children, but never seem to make up their minds and get going because they consider it a destiny more suitable for adults. However, even though Tuscany offers the most varied activities, especially cultural ones for adults, it can also be a fun place for children as it’s a region which bustles with popular festivals and celebrations and with many points of interest for the little ones.

Most of the families who travel to Tuscany organize their holidays in a “democratic way”, trying to strike the perfect balance between the vast cultural offer and entertainment and fun for the little ones.

Most of the rural houses, villas and hotels in the region have a swimming pool and, therefore, on many occasions the whole morning or part of the day is spent in visiting the area, while a couple of hours in the afternoon are allowed for enjoying a refreshing bath in the pool, a true gift for all the family. Likewise, the fields and gardens surrounding the accommodation are ideal for children to have fun in a fantastic natural landscape.

Besides the cultural visits in the city, we can mention, for example, Pinocchio Park, a place which will awaken the curiosity and fascination of both kids and adults. The park is located in Collodi, 10 km away from the famous Montecatini Terme, 15 km away from Lucca and 32 km away from Pisa.

The fantastic Parco di Pinnochio was built in the town where the author of the story, Carlo Lorenzini (better known as Carlo Collodi) spent his early childhood. The park is not the typical fun fair, but a suggestive and fantastic trip through the famous story by means of the most varied works of different artists, who express, in their own language, the most personal vision of this classic story.

From March 1 to October 31 the park offers the most varied activities both for kids and adults’ entertainment: puppet shows, story telling, magic, pictures taken in Gepetto’s workshop as well as a wonderful exhibition of the attractions of the time, which have been carefully restored with artisan precision.

The excursion to this beautiful park and the visit to the neighboring towns can provide a perfect opportunity for plunging into the world of fantasy we have so many times enjoyed thanks to this famous wooden toy.

Besides this proposal, in Pistoia we can find one of the best zoos in the region, famous for being a center devoted to the conservation of the lynx and the Apennine wolf.

For those traveling to Florence “Il parco delle Cascine” is one of the main parks in the city, which is full of families with children during the week end and happens to be the true lung of Florence.

To obtain updated information about traveling funfair attractions and shows for children you should consult the newspaper La Nazione or the information section on Tuscany of La Republica paper, as they have the most complete information as regards these kinds of proposals.

I’m sure that surrounded by such a wonderful landscape like that of Tuscany, ideal for any sport or outdoor activity, and with the wide variety of options the region offers, there won’t be single child who will not enjoy his Tuscan holidays to the utmost!

I hope this information has been useful for the moms and dads that follow us!

Regards,

Beatriz.

New Year's Eve in Tuscany

Tuscany is a perfect place to enjoy the last night of of 2008. This unique region offers a wide range of options for all tastes and for all ages: for those who are seeking peace and quietness, for those who are wishing dancing all night, for those who dream of beginning the new year tasting the excellent specialities of a traditional Tuscan resturant in a friendly and warm atmosphere...

Therefore Tuscany has a large offer of accommodations, so you can choose to spend your holidays in a exclusive Villa with your family and friends, in a beautiful country house or in a charming hotel. You will find for sure the place that fits perfectly with your accommodation needs.

Some years ago I decided to spend my Christmas holidays with some friends in a wonderful Villa close to Cortona, and all I can say is that it was an unforgettable experience living those days among our Tuscan neighbours learning all about their traditions, the way they live Christmas and tasting the excellent specialities of the Tuscan gastronomy. We had the New Year's Eve dinner in a great and small restaurant south of Siena called "La Visantaia".

As always there will be plenty parties - allnightlong- in cities such as Florence, where you can find good music, the best dj's, and all the best for the last night of the year. In this link you will be able to see some of the options for that night: http://www.capodannofirenze.it/new_year_eve_florence/new_year_eve_florence_saschall.html

Also Woody Allen will be in Tuscany for the coming weeks, he will be in concert in Florence on December 22, so if you are thinking of being there that day I might suggest you don't miss the chance!

I hope this advices to be useful for all of you, and I wish you the best in Christmas and in 2009!
