CoCo Chanel and Igor Stravinsky

Two weeks ago my husband and I went to see the movie, CoCo Chanel and Igor Stravinsky. I was excited because it's something about mademoiselle Chanel, and my husband was excited because of Stravinsky, one of his favorite composers.
The film examines the relationship between designer Coco Chanel and composer Igor Stravinsky, two of the most influential and creative figures of the last century. Chanel is the aggressor in the short-lived affair of which little is known, that began in 1920, seven years after she attended the world premiere of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring", as choreographed by Nijinsky and performed by the Ballets Russes. That notorious opening, May 29, 1913, at the Theatre des Champ-Elysees in Paris gathered storm clouds over the orchestra pit and shook the music world. The Audience was hissing and shouting at the stage. You are witnessing an audience's reaction to the coming of the 20th century. The rest of the film deals with the love affair of the two. It's an intense look at love, lust, passion and the heartbreak of his ill wife, Catherine. It's a 2009 French film directed by Jan Kounen, and has been showing in America theaters. I highly recommended that you see it with your partner. It's great!

This is what I wore for the movie: Madewell t-shirt, Alexander Wang shorts. It was so tempting to buy these shorts because it was on a great sale at Barneys online and they had only one left in my size.

I always bring light jacket or sweater with me when I go to see a movie because it's always cold in the theater. Junya Watanabe jacket was also on sale at Barneys.

To Garance Dore, this kind of short is to wear with flats and "don't try them with heels". As you know, I like to take risk and have fun with fashion. So, I went for heels; actually, Rodarte ankle boots. I'm petite enough to do it, I think. To be honest, I don't feel comfy to wear this kind of shorts to go out alone or go out with my girlfriends because I don't want to give a wrong message. But, I do feel comfy to wear them whenever I'm with my husband ;-)

I purchased this Chanel necklace when I was in Paris past April.

10 Questions for The Dalai Lama.

The last time I was on the flight to Portland, I had a chance to see the movie "10 Questions for the Dalai Lama".
It's directed by Rick Ray, and is a documentary about Tibet and the life of the Dalai Lama. It gives a view of who the Dalai Lama really is, told through both archival footage and the questions are asked directly to him during an audience. Ray traveled to India to meet him alone in his monastery. The questions mostly inquire as to the Dalai Lama's opinion on the conflicts in the world, but also deal with finding happiness on a personal level and on a more global level.

1. Why do the poor often seem happier than the rich?
2. Must a society lose its traditions in order to move into the future?
3. How do you reconcile a cmmitment to non-violence when face with violence?
4. Is internet freedom good?
5. Will there be another Dalai Lama?
6. Does tolerance work?
7. Can we save our environment?
8. ..........

Despite the very serious matter(a people in exile, oppression, suffering and loss of a whole culture) the movie- actually the Dalai Lama - has a contagious laugh. The D.L. still manages to put a smile on your face. More importantly, he makes you think, the wisdom of an extraordinary spiritual leader. His books sell everywhere in bookstores and thousands come to hear him lecture.

I certainly recommend it to anyone who wants to know about Tibet and the Dalai Lama.

• To him, he is just a simple monk.

Slumdog Millionaire

Many of you have probably already seen the 8 time Acadamy Award winning movie Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle and Love Leen Tan Dan. I just had a chance to see it last week and it's an incredible film. It really tells the truth about living in India and the struggles of surviving with a twist. It's a really tough life. I got so emotional while watching the film. Being a mom, you want the best things for your children and it was difficult to watch Jamal Malik, who is an orphan with no formal education and spent his younger years as a career-theif for survival. I highly reccomend this film to those who have yet to see it, it will educate you about India and their living and culture.

The story of Jamal Malik: he is an 18 year old orphan from the slums of Mumbai who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. He is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's "Who Wants to be a Millionaire", but when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating. Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life and adventures on the road. Each of the chapters in his story reveal a key to the every answers on the game show. The film also has a soft touch of love story that is so gentle and sweet, it shows us that we need to be patient and faithful to love.
